Beating the Summer Heat
When the heat is relentless and you’re sticking to the seat it’s nice to know that you have air conditioning. We know how important an air conditioner that works well can be to you, during your morning commute or to your family, during a long road trip. Even though most people may think that air conditioning isn’t a necessary part of your car it can cause a lot of problems if not looked after properly.
Here at Steve’s Automotive we’ve been servicing air conditioning systems in Longmont for over a decade, so we know what it means when your air conditioner smells funny, when your air conditioner blows hot air, and when your air conditioner doesn’t seem to work at all.
Help Your Car by Keeping Cool
Neglecting a faulty air conditioning system, especially in the winter, may seem unimportant. But leaking parts or damaged electrical systems may eventually affect how the rest of your vehicle functions. Another potential problem that may occur is moisture buildup that can lead to mold and other nasty problems in your air conditioning system. Generally, if you develop mold in your air conditioning system you will smell it. It goes without saying that mold in your air conditioning system can be a definite health hazard.
A third problem that can be associated with poor air conditioner performance is a faulty serpentine belt. If your serpentine belt becomes loose or breaks it can wreak havoc on your power steering, alternator, and several other important components.
Most air conditioning problems are relatively easy and painless for a qualified mechanic to take care of, if caught quickly. Here at Steve’s Automotive in Lakewood we have experienced, ASE Certified technicians who can help you prevent any damage to your car resulting from a faulty air conditioning unit.
Freezing Bigger Problems
There are ways to prevent big issues with your air conditioner. One of the best ways is simply to have your system recharged yearly and inspected the moment you notice a problem. When your air conditioner is recharged the system can easily be checked for problems. If there are clogs in the system, a poor fan keeping air from circulating properly, or condensation developing where it shouldn’t, then a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic should be able to pinpoint the potential problems.
This type of proactive car maintenance will keep bigger problems at bay and keep you cool all summer long.
Come to Steve’s for Your Car’s Breeze

Is Your Car Ready for That Routine Maintenance?
A routine oil change is one of the most important pieces of regular maintenance you can do for your car, but it’s also one of the most neglected pieces of regular maintenance. Oil changes help keep your engine lubricated and prevent undue stress caused by constant heat and friction. How frequently you need to change your oil depends on how you tend to drive your vehicle as well as the type of vehicle you’re driving. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to have your oil changed every three months or 3,000 miles.
At Steve’s Automotive our ASE Certified technicians can help you with a fast, professional oil change in Longmont. We specialize in more than just regular oil changes; we can also provide synthetic oil changes or diesel oil changes on imported or domestic cars, SUVs, or light trucks.
Driving Without Oil Changes
One of the more common issues with not getting a routine oil change is that the oil gets filled with particulates and impurities that can thicken the oil. This thick, dirty oil can cause more strain and friction on your car’s engine increasing the risk of overheating and reduced gas mileage.
Neglecting an oil change for a significant amount of time can be catastrophic for a car. The heat and friction from your engine can stop your engine dead if not properly lubricated. If you’ve ever tried to pull cookies off of a baking sheet or meat off a grill that wasn’t properly lubricated then you have an idea of what oil means to your car.
Differences between Oils
With so many different types of oil, it’s difficult to tell exactly what you should be using and when. When you come in for a regular oil change at our shop in Longmont, we can let you know the difference between all kinds of oils whether you’re curious about a 5W30, a 0W20, a 10W40, a synthetic, or a conventional type of oil.
Many manufacturers recommend specific types of oil. When in doubt consult your owner’s manual or one of the expert, ASE Certified technicians at Steve’s Automotive.
MOA Oil Additive and Fuel System Flush
When you come into Steve’s Automotive we go the extra mile to make sure your car is running at the top of its game. That’s why we recommend adding MOA to your oil change. MOA helps to increase all the good qualities of your car’s oil by preventing oxidation and oil thickening.
An oil system flush is almost exactly what it sounds like. We add cleaning agents to your vehicle and run it through so it pulls the gunk and grime out of all the important parts. With rough and thick gunk in your car’s system all the oil in the world won’t make it run like new, but after a quick oil system flush your car’s engine should be gunk and grime free.

The importance of tires on a car is fairly obvious but shouldn’t be understated. The slightest shift in weight, alignment, or balance can drastically change how your car performs overall, particularly when it comes to handling and braking.
At Steve’s Automotive, we understand automobiles and have been servicing tires for the Longmont area for over a decade. We can look at wear patterns and let you know of any abnormalities and what they may mean for the rest of your vehicle.
When you drive out of a shop with brand new tires you can feel the difference instantly. The tires grip the road well and they brake much faster than worn, smooth tires do.
When you’re looking at tires one of the most important things to observe is the tread pattern. Tread patterns say a lot about how your vehicle will handle and what conditions your new tires can take. You’ll notice that tires for rain, snow, and dry weather all have vastly different tread patterns. We can help you select the perfect tires for driving around Longmont, whatever the weather.
We have a huge selection of tires from top manufacturers. Our selection includes Bridgestone, Firestone, and Fuzion.
Front-end alignment is our absolute specialty. We have four different alignment systems in place to accommodate all types of vehicles. In addition to being a full-service stop for cars, SUVs, and light trucks we can do alignments on RVs and large trucks as well.
If your vehicle is handling poorly or pulling to one side then it’s likely that your alignment is part of the problem. In addition to reducing problematic steering a good alignment will keep your tires from wearing out unevenly and prematurely.
Balance and Rotation
Sometimes, all your vehicle needs is a quick and easy balance and rotation. These are some of the simplest pieces of preventative maintenance you can do for your tires.
The purpose behind rotating your tires is that they wear differently depending on their position on the vehicle. Some vehicles are more front-heavy which will cause the car to distribute weight differently on the front tires versus the back ones. Beyond the normal weight distribution of the car, the driving style can change how the wheels are worn as well. Think about your daily commute. How many right turns do you do on the way to work or the grocery store? Even an uneven pattern of turning can change how your tires wear.
Regular tire balancing is recommended because, without proper weight distribution inside the wheel and tire itself, your tire may have a tendency to wobble. This will cause more than an uncomfortable ride. It may even damage the suspension if not properly maintained.
Luckily, tire balancing is a very quick and simple process and one of the fundamental services that Steve’s Automotive provides.
At Steve’s Automotive we have been servicing imported and domestic cars, SUVs, and light trucks for over a decade with stellar customer service and expert, ASE Certified technicians, and a vast knowledge base. Our tire service for the people of Longmont is second to none.
Come visit Steve’s Automotive for all of your tire needs. We’re located just east of Highway 287 and one-half mile north of Ken Pratt Boulevard.
Oh, No! My Check Engine Light Came On!
Seeing the check engine light illuminate your dashboard can be confusing and ominous for almost every driver. Some of the problems that your check engine light indicates are quick, easy, and relatively cheap to fix, while others are more costly and difficult. One thing that all of them have in common is that fixing the problem now will be cheaper and easier than fixing the problems they may cause in the future.
Steve’s Automotive has been demystifying the check engine light by running vehicle diagnostic tests for the people of Longmont for over a dozen years.
What Does a Check Engine Light Mean?
First of all, one thing that a check engine light may be telling you is that you have a loose or cracked gas cap. This is by far the easiest fix and sometimes just involves hopping out of the car, retightening your gas cap, and seeing if the check engine light turns off. Sometimes it may mean having to buy a cheap gas cap, if your old one is cracked.
Outside of that simple solution a check engine light could mean any number of things. Most newer cars have several monitoring systems that check how efficiently your fuel is burning, if carbon monoxide is building up, and how much oxygen is flowing through the system, among other things.
What Can I Do About It?
Other than checking your gas cap it’s difficult to tell what is happening in your car without specialized equipment. A qualified mechanic with the right diagnostic tools can check through your car’s systems for possible culprits. It’s similar to going to your doctor when you’re feeling sick. Sometimes they have to run tests to know for sure what exactly is going on.
At Steve’s Automotive we serve Boulder County, the Front Range area, and the people of Longmont by doing thorough vehicle diagnostic tests.
We Figured Out the Problem. What Happens Now?
Steve’s Automotive is a full service auto shop for imported and domestic cars, light trucks, and SUVs. We can usually repair any problem that your Check Engine light is pointing to. We can let you know, with parts and labor, how much repairs will be and about how long they will take.
We can’t emphasize enough the importance of fixing any problems that our diagnostic tests come up with soon after they are detected. Like we said before, many of the problems they indicate can be fixed quickly and cheaply but, if left unattended, can turn into significantly more costly hassles.
Aside from turning into bigger issues down the road, many problems indicated by a check engine light mean that your car isn’t running efficiently and is having problems with excessive emissions or reduced gas mileage.
So come to Steve’s Automotive. We’ve been running vehicle diagnostics in Longmont for over a decade and have become a trusted name in automotive repair. We’re just east of Highway 287 and one-half mile north of Ken Pratt Boulevard.
